MLA Children's and Youth Services Interest Group
Notes from 2021 MLA Conference Meeting:
- Incoming
Chairperson: Dusty Deans
- R2R
Rendezvous Updates – 2021 will be virtual (September 30th, more
details TBD on WIRED and on MSL website), 2022 will hopefully be in-person
(pending funding)
- General
Training Areas To Focus on Next Year:
- Creating
foundational, core training for all children’s/youth services librarians
so that Montana librarians are generally on the same page with baseline
knowledge (especially helpful for library turnover, or for folks who are
new to children’s/youth services)
- Sharing
Storytime with peers – Organizing Storytime Sharing Sessions, so folks
can share and learn from each other
- Mentorship
Programs – Possibly matching up folks at the Rendezvous, or matching
folks within regions?
- Having
more frequent interest group meetings, instead of just once a year at MLA
- Teen
Services/Resources – More support in this area! Bringing speakers and
training to talk specifically about this age group and how to engage with
them
- Specific
Topics Discussed:
- Discord,
TikTok, Dungeons and Dragons
- How
to advocate for teen and children’s services with fellow library staff in
your library
- Asking
James from Lewis and Clark Library to possibly lead a collection
development training (standing orders came up)
Action Items/Proposals:
- Having
a monthly or bi-monthly online get-together with a specific topic to
discuss (ex: Dungeons and Dragons, Popular Youth Apps/Games, Using STEM in
Storytimes, etc). We can share resources, questions, and ideas on that
specific topic (or I can find a speaker about it), and then discussion can
turn to other topics that organically come up as well.
- Would
it be more useful to decide the list of topics ahead of time (like at the
beginning of the year), or decide as we go? Or maybe decide every
quarter, so that the schedule can be more responsive to timely topics?
- Including
more specific training/speakers on teen services. If you all have attended
trainings in the past that stood out to you on teen services, please let
me know!
